Why Should I Pursue a Bachelor’s in Business?

Save money and boost your earning potential by enrolling in one of our 30 most affordable online business bachelor’s degrees. As a future business leader, you’ll work to protect your company’s bottom line. So, here’s our bottom line: a bachelor’s degree pays big time.

According to Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce, workers with bachelor’s degrees earn 84% more than those with only a high school education. Moreover, a bachelor’s degree is worth, on average, $2.8 million in lifetime earnings.

Online education makes earning an affordable degree easier than ever. Is the school with the lowest cost-of-attendance three states over? No problem. You’ll never need to step foot on campus to graduate.

What Will I Learn with a Bachelor’s in Business?

Here’s the short answer: a lot. A bachelor’s in business is an incredibly versatile degree. It will prepare you for a variety of professions, from human resource management and real estate agency to financial advising and accounting. It might even lead you to start your own business.

As an undergraduate student, you’ll take general education requirements that lay a foundation for your business major. Classes in science, math, writing, and psychology will provide specific skills to help your career. They will also improve your overall problem-solving and communication abilities.

Once you’ve completed your general education requirements, you’ll focus on your business major. A core curriculum will teach you how companies operate from top to bottom and how you can lead a business to reach new heights of success.

How Much Do Business Majors Earn?

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a median yearly income of $68,350 for all business and financial occupations in 2018. That is almost double the average annual wage for all occupations.

Why does accreditation matter?

Simply put, you want your degree to mean something, and accreditation guarantees just that. Accreditation affirms that a university will truly prepare you for success in your career. It ensures that employers will recognize the value of your diploma. And it confirms that you will learn from qualified instructors who are using a curriculum that matches what you’ll need to know on the job.

If a school is not accredited, then an outside party has not evaluated the quality of its academic offerings. This institution might talk highly of itself in marketing materials, but it hasn’t had an objective third party back up its claims.

How do universities earn accreditation?

Universities often pursue two types of accreditation: institutional and programmatic. Institutional accrediting agencies evaluate the overall strength of a university or college. They look at things like the education level of a school’s faculty members or the support services they provide to students. They also examine an institution’s effectiveness by surveying how many students complete their degrees and gain employment after graduation.

Some universities seek to prove the quality of a specific academic program by earning programmatic accreditation on top of institutional accreditation. Programmatic accreditation shows that a curriculum’s learning outcomes align with the skills and knowledge needed for that field.

For business programs, there are several programmatic accrediting agencies, including the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP), and the International Accreditation Council for Business Education (IACBE).

Less than 900 universities around the world are AACSB-accredited, and this organization is often considered the most competitive stamp of approval. However, all of these accrediting agencies carry weight, and each has different criteria for determining the quality of a business school.

For example, the AACSB tends to focus on a business school’s research output, while the ACBSP stresses professors’ teaching skills. The IACBE often provides accreditation to smaller universities. These typically do not have the same research capabilities as large institutions, but they might boast a more individualized student experience.

What is the difference between a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science?

The difference lies in the type of coursework you’ll take. A bachelor of arts is often more focused on the liberal arts. A bachelor of arts program is likely to take an interdisciplinary approach, encouraging students to take courses in several areas of study to gain a well-rounded education that promotes expert problem-solving and communication skills.

A bachelor of science program, on the other hand, is often more focused on the practical application of knowledge learned in the classroom. As its name suggests, it often incorporates more science-focused classes. In the past, BA programs carried more clout than BS programs, but that’s beginning to change as educated workers in the STEM fields have become more in-demand.

Choosing whether to pursue a BS or a BA should come down to your professional goals. For example, a BA often requires proficiency in a foreign language. So, if you are interested in international business, then this path is probably best. Alternatively, if becoming a chief technology officer at a Fortune 500 company is your goal, then a BS program might be the best choice.

What are the highest paying business jobs?

If you want a six-figure income, you might want to focus on specializing your business education in management, finance, sales, or economics. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, most of the highest paying business professionals have “manager” in their titles. Other high-paying jobs include those of financial analysts, personal financial advisors, sales engineers, and economists.

Should I plan to earn a Master of Business Administration?

Success in business often requires skills that can’t be learned in a textbook. That’s why work experience is greatly valued in the corporate world. So, a master of business administration is not a requirement for advancing your career, but it does help.

According to the BLS, 85% of managers have master’s degrees. There are fewer available job titles as you move up the corporate ladder, making these positions more competitive. Today, more Americans than ever before are earning bachelor’s degrees, so pursuing a graduate-level degree has become an increasingly common way to boost your resume in a highly educated workforce.
