Prioritize Time Management

As a working student, your first order of business is to prioritize time management tips that help you make the most of your time. As you no doubt discovered when working on your bachelor’s degree, doing so involves multiple components that, when used together, will help you get far more done each day than you thought possible.

See Also: Easiest Masters Degree Online

Achieving Online Master’s Degree Balance: Create a Structured Schedule

A busy schedule can seem utterly chaotic if you don’t take the time to structure it in some way. This isn’t to say that your entire day needs to be accounted for down to the minute – doing so will likely only cause more chaos when you can’t adhere to the strict daily breakdown.

However, to achieve a good work life balance and have time for school obligations, family time, and, hopefully, some leisure time, you need to structure your daily agenda to account for all these things. Working a traditional 9-5 career means structuring your time before and after work to address your other obligations.

So, you might set aside 30-45 minutes each morning to read an article for class or discuss coursework with classmates. Then, after work, have a dedicated time to be with your family, so you have a mental health break – a time to decompress and enjoy time with your loved ones.

Your evenings might include structured time to study, say one or two hours to complete class assignments and projects. You might also identify time to work out to maintain your physical and mental health.

This is a simple case of a structured schedule. However, it illustrates that you can accomplish a lot over the day if you set realistic goals and break your day into chunks addressing the tasks you have.

See Also: Financial Aid Tips for Online College

Set Clear Boundaries

The next step in finding a balance between your full-time job, academic performance, and personal relationships is to set clear boundaries for each. This goes hand in hand with the previous point about having a structured agenda to achieve balance between work and life.

For example, it isn’t enough to establish your early mornings for academic work. Instead, you need to communicate this to your loved ones and colleagues. By setting clear boundaries that 7:00 am to 7:30 am is for schoolwork, your family, friends, and work colleagues are more likely to let you have that time without interruption.

But clear boundaries aren’t just for establishing time for your work or studying online. You also need to have clear boundaries for personal time. These boundaries are likely less for others and more for yourself – you need to establish that your academic work and career don’t leak into your personal time. After all, without enough time away from school and work, burnout is much more likely.

The question is, how do you develop the habit of a work life balance with clear boundaries? Managing work and online studies will be easier if you:

Have a dedicated study space at home. Discuss with your family that you need to be left alone when you’re in your schoolwork space. Your study habits for remote education will do no good if you don’t have a quiet, defined space to study!

Avoid bringing work home. Instead, work on being more efficient at work so you don’t bring it home with you that must be completed by the next day. If you work from home, try segregating your school and workspaces. This might be as simple as putting your work away when you’re studying and your study materials away when you’re working.

Unplug from work after hours. Resist the urge to check your work email or answer work-related calls after hours to the extent possible. Likewise, avoid working on projects or other class requirements when at work. Our lives are hectic enough – a moment or two away from technology can help rejuvenate you and lead to improved mental health.

Learn how to say no. The ultimate way to establish clear boundaries is to know your boundaries. Don’t take on too much at work or with your degree. Trying to be a superhero that does it all will only cause your boundaries to fall apart, your personal care to diminish, and stress to increase.

Consistently evaluate your boundaries to seek improvement. The boundaries you set aren’t in stone. Evaluate what’s working and what isn’t and address the latter to be more productive.

Utilize Technology and Tools

Getting an online degree necessitates that you have a good relationship with technology. Your required courses undoubtedly require that you utilize technology for the basic essentials of your degree – receiving and submitting assignments, communicating with classmates and faculty, and conducting research, to name a few.

But you can also harness the power of technology to help you manage the tasks of your school programs and career responsibilities. A few highly recommended options for students are outlined below.

See Also: 12 Real-World Strategies for Applying Your Online Interior Design Degree

Focus Keeper

Focus Keeper is a great option for time management for online learners. The app helps organize your daily workflow with a timer to work for 25 minutes. Then you take a five-minute break. You repeat this process three times, then take a longer break, 20-30 minutes. By structuring your time in this manner, you can organize your day more effectively and get more done while still getting the mental breaks you need to stay sharp.

Trello

Trello is a task-management app ideal for students and professionals to organize daily, weekly, and monthly goals. You can develop multiple project boards, add and update details, devise workflows, and much more. The changes you make sync to all your devices, too. If your goal is to improve your online master’s degree productivity, Trello is a must.

Evernote

Evernote is a must-have tool for online students and professionals. Evernote is a digital note-taking app that allows you to make notes with images, audio files, and other digital assets. You can share your notes with others, so it’s great for collaborating on online projects with other students. It’s also beneficial for employers to get everyone on the same page for complex projects.

Freedom

Freedom helps direct your attention by blocking your social media accounts while working. It can also block streaming sites, shopping sites, and anything else that might distract you from completing the task at hand. You can block sites for a specific timeframe (e.g., a couple of hours) or via a customizable schedule as you determine is necessary.

Coursera

Each class you take will have many academic resources. Still, if you need to brush up on skills or want to expand your understanding of a topic, Coursera is an excellent resource for students.

Coursera students choose among thousands of courses that run the gamut from economics to biology to international relations. There are no class times – everything is in a work-at-your-own-pace format (though most classes have set deadlines for completing tasks). If you plan ahead, you can develop a workflow on a weekly basis that accounts for your degree requirements, your extracurricular work on Coursera, and your work and life obligations.

Develop Effective Study Habits

It’s safe to say that most students do not have effective study habits. It’s one thing to plan ahead and set aside study hours. It’s another thing to implement online graduate program success strategies that make that time valuable. The following strategies can help:

Divide large tasks into smaller ones. “Chunking” not only diminishes the stress of facing an enormous task but also enables you to get hyperfocused on the smaller components of a larger goal. Think of it like creating a to do list of small tasks that will help you achieve a larger goal.

Learn about your learning style. Effective study habits are different for each person. For example, if you’re a visual learner, rewatching lecture videos might be more helpful than for a student that’s a tactile learner. Understand how you best learn and maximize your study time by using those techniques.

Try the Pomodoro Technique. The Focus Keeper app discussed earlier utilizes the Pomodoro Technique – a sequence of 25-minute work sessions followed by a five-minute break. This method of zeroing in on how much time you work effectively minimizes distractions, maximizes productivity, and divides bigger tasks into smaller ones.

Be an active learner. Engaging with the material you’re learning helps you explore the subject more deeply. Ask questions. Be inquisitive. Offer your thoughts. Take a few moments to reflect on what you’ve learned. Take notes and review them. These active learning strategies can help you retain more information and make your study time more valuable.

Create a Support Network

Balancing work, school, and personal obligations isn’t something you have to do on your own. Instead, having a support network is crucial for your success. The best approach is to have a support network that spans the various aspects of your daily functioning and helps you with navigating online degree challenges.

Workplace Support

The first step in building a professional support network is communicating to your colleagues and supervisors that you’re working towards your master’s degree. In doing so, you can work together as a team to accommodate your college experience.

So, a colleague might cover for you at work if you have an early school obligation. Likewise, you might arrange with your supervisor to take a shorter lunch so you can leave work earlier to get home and begin your studies.

But a support network at your job is more than accommodating your schedule or covering for you. Building a network of peers and mentors gives you a wealth of experience and expertise to draw from. The people who support you at work might have tips for balancing your career, school, and personal obligations. They might also provide insights for improving your productivity while you’re at work. Use their expertise to your advantage!

Building Support Network for Online Students

One of the best features of online higher education is that programs have built-in academic support. Not only can you lean on the expertise of your professors at your graduate school, but you can also reach out to other graduate students (or a teaching assistant) for helpful tips to avoid procrastination, improve attention, and generally achieve a better work and study balance.

On top of that, online learning platforms have features like 24/7 tech support, access to an academic advisor, and services like tutoring and other helpful information. Use these and other student services to help you stay on track with your studies.

Personal Support

When you’re stressed, you can turn to your friends and family to be a sounding board. They can help proofread your work or even assist you with finishing projects. Likewise, your personal network can ensure you tend to your physiological health and emotional needs, too.

Make Self-Care a Priority

Maintaining your physical and mental health should be one of our core values. Yet, it’s one of the first things that’s neglected when you have to balance work and getting an education.

Making self-maintenance a priority doesn’t have to be difficult, though. It’s surprising how five or ten minutes here and there throughout the day can help you stay centered and more aware of your feelings. Below are some self-care strategies for online graduate students that address mental needs, physical needs, and help you develop healthy habits.

Learn how to relax

If you feel overwhelmed with stress, start small by taking a few moments to step back, rest, and relax is important. Deep breathing exercises, meditation, and mindfulness training are all excellent avenues for combatting the effects of stress and improving the overall quality of your life. Likewise, these techniques can help you fall asleep more quickly and get improved sleep throughout the night.

Seek Mental Health Care When Needed

We all have our limits of what we can handle on our own. Sometimes, we need help from a professional to process stress, anxiety, and emotions and to provide more insight into why we’re feeling or behaving the way we are.

What’s more, things can seem so bad that you develop imposter syndrome – an anxious situation in which you don’t feel much internal success despite ample external evidence to the contrary. Of course, imposter syndrome isn’t the only mental health concern you might face. Depression and anxiety are common across all demographics. Less serious issues might be increased worry, lack of sleep, and a propensity to forget things.

If self-help isn’t doing the trick for helping you manage day-to-day living, or if you’re beginning to feel like you can’t cope, take the necessary steps to get mental health care and other resources.

Attend to Your Physical Health

Finding time to go to the gym, amongst everything you must do, can be extremely difficult. But you don’t have to spend an hour a day in a hard workout to address your physical health needs.

If you’re crunched for time like most people, take five minutes to do something other than sit at your desk. Do a few simple stretches. A short walk – just 10 minutes or so – can help you decompress (both mentally and physically). You might also walk your dog, play with your kids in the backyard, or do a quick yoga session.

The key here is to be consistent and develop a routine. Regular exercise each week makes your body more capable of withstanding the rigors of sitting in front of your computer doing schoolwork. It also helps you clear your mind and reduce stress levels, helping you to be more productive and successful.

Eat Right

Eating a balanced diet offers many different benefits that will help you improve your ability to work and study. A healthy diet:

Boosts immunity to illness

Promotes improved digestive health

Strengthens bones and supports muscles

Helps maintain a healthy weight

Eating right also helps lower the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and some cancers. In other words, the healthier you eat, the healthier you will be, and the more capable you will be of performing well as a student and an employee.

Be Adaptable and Resilient

As noted earlier, having a structured schedule and defined boundaries are helpful to you as you pursue higher education while working full-time. However, you must be adaptable in determining your agenda and boundaries.

A great example of this is being open to adjusting your schedule as needed. Perhaps your initial schedule has you working on graduate school coursework late at night from 9:00-11:00 pm. However, in practice, you might not have the mental energy to devote to your studies at that hour.

So, adapting your schedule to study earlier might be advisable. You may go to bed earlier to get more rest and get up earlier to do your schoolwork before the workday begins. Or, you might study until 10:30 pm each weekday, then complete your studies on the weekend with fewer time constraints.

It’s necessary to be flexible with work, too, in case you haven’t noticed! You’ll have to work early on occasion. There will be some late nights on the job as well. Deadlines might shift. Colleagues might get sick. You have to be adaptable to all of these eventualities in your work community.

The same goes for your home life. No matter how much you try to schedule your day, other responsibilities always come up – kids need rides, your significant other has to work late, or the dog gets sick. Developing resiliency to roll with the punches is essential for managing all the components of your life.

Celebrate Small Victories

Earlier, the suggestion was made to “chunk” your day as part of building a structured schedule. The same principle is effective in breaking down long-term tasks at work and school so you can celebrate periodic small victories.

There’s a lot of value in acknowledging the steps you take to achieve a major goal. On the one hand, it helps you feel a sense of accomplishment that motivates you to keep your nose to the grindstone. On the other hand, it also helps you maintain an optimistic focus on what you want to achieve in the next few years.

You don’t need to throw a party every time you complete a task. But giving yourself props for ticking one more thing off your to-do list is an excellent way of spending your time. So, treat yourself to a coffee on your way to your job after getting a new client. Set up a time to meet with other students to celebrate the halfway point of your graduate program. Get with your family and plan a time during the week to get ice cream to recognize new skills you’ve learned in school. Anything that gets you out of your routine and takes note of your accomplishments is worth your time.

These are simple ways to celebrate your accomplishments with work and study obligations. Still, they do wonders for helping you maintain the positive attitude needed to power through challenges and address the next career or educational goal.

Seek Help When Needed

One of the fastest ways to burn yourself out is to try to shoulder the responsibility of doing everything. That’s why the earlier suggestion to learn how to say no is so important. There’s only so much you can do in class and in your career!

Fortunately, the prior step of building a support network makes it much easier to ask for help when you’re in a jam. If you’re stuck on an assignment for school, ask classmates or your professor for help. If you need help meeting a work deadline, contact colleagues for assistance. If your stress level is sky-high, seek guidance from a school counselor or outside assistance from a mental health provider.

Don’t wait to reach out for help, either. As noted earlier, leaning on others is essential for your success. Having others to lean on will help you address the challenges before you, lessen your worry, and generate a routine that makes you more successful at work and at university.

While it’s your name on your office door and your name on your diploma, achieving your educational and professional goals isn’t solely on your shoulders. Instead, you can rely on the expertise and support of your friends, family, colleagues, classmates, and professors to help you reach the finish line.

Online learning has its benefits – it’s a flexible means of getting your education and allows you to save money that you would otherwise spend on room and board at school or transportation costs to commute. Online learning is often more accommodating of the individual learning process, too.

For example, some online courses are highly structured with set times for you to “meet” with your professor and classmates online. Other online college courses take the opposite approach and allow you to work at your own pace through the course material without requiring a set class time.

    <?php echo do_shortcode('[mobius_el]'); ?>

That doesn’t mean online classes are a walk in the park, though. You need to approach your learning with the same commitment and dedication as you would if you study in a traditional classroom setting.

The ten online college success tips listed below will set you up for success for effective online learning, no matter your learning style, experience taking online classes, or your level of study.

1. Establish a Routine for Online Learning Success

One of the primary enemies of online learners is not “getting into the groove” of taking online classes. This most frequently occurs in the absence of a learning routine. Without a schedule to keep you on track, it’s all too easy to say, “Oh, I’ll do that later.”

To counteract this problem, one of the most effective online learning strategies is to set a weekly schedule for study sessions. Do your best to have the same daily routine as you would if you took traditional on-campus classes.

For example, you might work on one class every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10-11 am and another class every Tuesday and Thursday from 1-2:30 pm.

Your sessions will most frequently be independent learning that you do as your schedule allows. It’s worth it to form study groups with your fellow classmates, too. Having periodic Zoom meetings with classmates will help you stay focused and on track with your coursework.

Creating a to-do list to stay focused might also be worth it. To-do lists help you prioritize tasks, keep track of due dates, and make large tasks more manageable by breaking them down into smaller to-dos. These kinds of lists offer many other benefits, such as:

Improved planning to meet future needs and goals

Better organization and productivity

Fewer forgotten or missed tasks

Greater ability for balancing work and online education

Improved time management (more on that in a bit)

Lists can help increase motivation as well.

On the one hand, a list with nothing checked off can kick you into high gear to get things done. On the other hand, the act of crossing off one to-do after the other can also motivate you to keep your nose to the grindstone. As far as online course productivity hacks go, this is one of the best!

2. Optimize Your Study Environment

Now that you’ve set a daily routine, the next step in improving virtual study skills is to create a learning environment that maximizes your ability to complete assignments and minimize distractions.

When designing a dedicated study space, think of a layout that best suits your needs. For example, if you prefer to study at a desk, have a desk space that’s large enough to accommodate your learning materials – your computer, books, notebooks, and so forth. A comfortable, supportive desk chair will make the hours you spend at your desk more comfortable and productive, too.

Your study space should have adequate light to minimize eye strain, too. Staring at a computer screen for several hours a day can take a toll on you physically, as can sitting in a chair for too long. No matter how comfortable and accommodating your study environment is, take frequent breaks to get your blood flowing and allow your body to move around.

Consider adding plants to your study space, as they help clean the air, and their color can help stimulate improved productivity and creativity. Add aromatherapy to the mix as well – some essential oils like eucalyptus, rosemary, and lavender help improve focus and reduce anxiety.

It also helps to minimize distractions in your dedicated study space. Online learning means interacting with technology, but that technology can also lead to distractions. When doing your coursework, consider using focus apps to block non-essential websites. Consider putting your phone on silent or do not disturb while you’re studying.

If possible, your study space should be as far away from the common areas of your home to reduce noise from your family or roommates. If ambient noise is still a problem, invest in a white noise machine so you aren’t distracted by the random sounds of the day. Just remember to come out of your study cave now and again to take a break and recharge!

3. Connect with Your Online Community

Just because you’re studying online from home doesn’t mean you don’t have a learning community that can help support you. As noted earlier, you can collaborate with other students in study groups to complete assignments and group projects. Online study groups are great for preparing for exams, too.

Many online courses have a discussion component as part of the class requirements. That is, you might have to log in to the class website and participate in live discussions or add your thoughts to discussion threads. Either way, you can share your thoughts, ask questions, and answer other students’ questions, which will help integrate your learning into your memory even more.

Of course, you can also contact instructors for guidance as part of your commitment to the online learning community. Many online college courses have messaging capabilities so you can communicate with your professors quickly and easily. And even if a class doesn’t offer that functionality, your online professors will be reachable via phone and email.

4. Hone Your Time Management Skills

Time management is essential for all college students, but it’s especially important when taking online courses.

Without the benefit of in-person classes with your professors and constant reminders of upcoming assignments, projects, and exams, it’s up to you to use your time wisely. There are several methods for improving time management for online students.

Plan Ahead for Completing Assignments

Consult your class syllabus at the beginning of each online course and add the due dates to your calendar. Set a reminder in your phone for a couple of weeks before the due date to remind you that you have an upcoming assignment.

Give yourself ample time to complete the assignments, too. Be sure to consider your work and social lives when planning your study time.

Use Study Tips to Manage Time Effectively

Time management study tips are as varied as they are common, but not all tips for online learning work for everyone. Building your study sessions will partly be a fact-finding mission. Try different things and see what works or doesn’t work for your situation.

Below are a few tips for remote learning focus to get you started.

Eliminate Distractions

Remember that optimizing your study environment by eliminating distractions is critical to your success, but how you do this is up to you. As discussed earlier, you might invest in a white noise machine, put your phone on silent, or use apps to help you maintain focus.

Specify Your Learning Objectives

Break down your study time to address specific learning objectives. Doing so helps you prioritize what you need to do while minimizing the risk of feeling overwhelmed by everything you need to learn or do.

Focus on One Task at a Time

Have your to-do list handy to help you focus on one thing at a time. Don’t worry about what you need to do for your next class until you’ve completed the tasks for your current course. Likewise, minimizing distractions will help you maintain your focus on what’s important.

Take Frequent Breaks

Though you might feel overwhelmed and as though you don’t have time to take breaks, it’s important to do so for your physical and mental health. If you keep pushing and pushing, you’re more likely to lose focus, get aches and pains, and get frustrated.

As discussed earlier, when studying for an online course, make it a point to take frequent breaks to let your mind and body rest. Try to do so every 30 minutes or so for optimal results.

Get in the Groove by Starting With Small Tasks

Your study schedule can be best organized to use your time effectively by working on small tasks first. Doing so gives you a sense of accomplishment as you quickly work through them while building motivation to accomplish more things.

5. Utilize Online Tools and Resources

One of the best parts of online learning is that there are incredible tools and resources to help you work toward your college degree. Though you might spend most of your time studying independently, that doesn’t mean you have to do it alone. You can rely on the tools and resources listed below (and many others) to help you along the way.

Engage With Online Course Materials

Each online class you take will have various tools to enhance your learning. This might include online discussions with your classmates and professors, online study group opportunities, and interactive videos, to name a few.

It’s also worth it to take advantage of online quizzes and flashcards. Online quizzes enable you to test your knowledge and identify your weak areas, that way, you can focus your study time appropriately. Online flashcards serve the same purpose and are particularly helpful in learning terminology and basic facts about your studies.

Furthermore, explore the online college support services your school provides. From individual online tutoring to assistance with writing and editing papers to study tips for online learning, your school likely offers many programs to help you navigate your degree program.

Use Google Tools

Google’s free tools are a great resource for organizing your academic life. You can use Google Docs to take notes, Google Sheets to track to-dos, and Google Slides to make presentations for class projects. Google Calendar is also helpful in syncing due dates across multiple devices.

Tap Into Apps and Other Resources

Online learners like you can use apps and online tools to make studying more organized and productive. Some excellent apps include:

Grammarly – An AI tool that checks spelling and grammar.

Duolingo – An interactive app for learning new languages.

Khan Academy – A great way to brush up on your existing knowledge and learn new skills.

TED – This app (iOS, Android) is home to TED Talks, which can be useful for your studies, as well as inspiring and enlightening.

Evernote – An all-in-one app for task management, note-taking, and scheduling.

myHomework – A digital planner that syncs across your devices and reminds you of upcoming due dates.

EasyBib – An online tool that automates the process of citing resources. It also has a plagiarism checker.

6. Be an Active Online Learner

Like an in-person class, online learning requires you to participate actively. You can actively participate in online classes by contributing to class discussions, asking questions, and participating in study sessions.

You can also be an active learner when you study online independently. For example, ask questions as you read texts and jot down notes to remind yourself of important details. When you’re done, write down the key points of the reading in your own words so you can reference it later.

It’s also helpful to set clear learning objectives as part of active learning. When you sit down to study or participate in activities for your online classes, establish what you want or need to accomplish by considering the following:

What you already know.

What you need to learn.

What you want to learn.

What you’re expected to do.

How you will acquire new knowledge.

How you will retain new knowledge.

Other virtual class participation tips revolve around going above and beyond to maximize your learning.

In other words, don’t settle for doing the bare minimum. Try not to be satisfied with doing only what’s required to pass. Active online learning involves diving deeper into the content, being curious, and challenging yourself to learn more and make the most of the online instruction provided to you.

See also: Easiest Online College Programs for Undergrads

7. Foster Self-Motivation and Accountability

To address step six, specifically to go above and beyond what’s required, you need a higher level of motivation and accountability. The question is, how do you do this?

Partner With a Fellow Classmate for Support

Having an accountability partner is one of the best ways of staying motivated in online classes and on track with your studies.

Classmates taking the same course as you understand the struggles of online classes. They know the course requirements and due dates and might have insights into course materials and assignments that you don’t. Likewise, you might have insights they lack!

Additionally, working with other online students gives you an emotional support system that might otherwise be lacking. Sure, your friends and family are valuable resources for help and support, but they don’t fully understand your experience taking online classes like one of your classmates does.

Establish Personal Goals for Academic Success

What do you want to accomplish with online learning? Do you want to gain more knowledge by taking a few classes? Do you want to complete a certificate program? Are you preparing for a certain job by finishing an online degree program? You need to consider these and other questions – and their answers – to establish goals that will help you succeed.

When generating goals for online classes, it’s important to make them manageable – much like the items on your to-do list.

Why? Small goals are more easily achievable. They also help you break down larger goals into smaller chunks, which helps you address each component more thoroughly. Small goals also help you stay motivated – you benefit from the repeated gratification of meeting each small goal, which fuels you to continue working.

8. Adapt to the Online Learning Environment

Online degree programs require that you embrace the unique challenges of online education. The most important of these challenges for most students is learning how to stay motivated and manage time wisely.

We’ve already discussed tips to address these issues in the previous sections, so rather than repeating those, let’s explore a few other tips for adapting to online learning.

A good place to start is to develop new skills for studying online:

Communication skills – As an online student, you need to communicate clearly in writing. It’s one thing to be able to ask a professor a question in person. It’s another thing to communicate that question online from a remote location. If writing isn’t your forte, it’s time to brush up on those skills.

Technical skills – Understanding how to use technologies like computers, computer programs, and online learning platforms is essential to your success. In many cases, you might already be proficient with the technologies you’ll use for online learning. But chances are good that you’ll also need to learn new programs for students that learn remotely.

Typing – Online learning requires a lot of typing – much more than learning in person. Much of your communications with your professors and classmates will be via email, chat rooms, discussion boards, and the like. Likewise, most online programs require a good deal of research and writing. Being a good typist is a significant advantage for furthering your online education.

Persistence – You’ll need to develop an attitude of persistence if you want to be successful in your online program. You will undoubtedly face technical challenges, personal trials, and frustrations with course material you don’t understand. But overcoming these and other obstacles requires that you stay the course, keep trying, and ask for help when needed.

Adaptability – You might be a night owl instead of a morning person, but if your studies require you to complete morning assignments, you’ll need to adapt to this new reality. You’ll also need to develop adaptability when managing school tasks, work, and family obligations. Try to go with the flow as much as possible and rely on the tools and tips discussed throughout this article to help you manage your responsibilities.

Online college study techniques will also help you adapt to the online learning experience. As noted earlier, establishing a consistent routine and creating an optimal study session space will go a long way in helping you succeed. Developing a toolkit of online study resources will also help you optimize your time and maximize your opportunities to study.

Moreover, as discussed in section seven above, finding ways to increase your motivation and accountability will improve your ability to maintain good online study habits.

New students to online learning are sometimes really good with the technical aspects of remote learning but could be better in the personal responsibility department. If you’re falling behind because of a lack of motivation or accountability, seek help from classmates, your professors, your school’s academic success department, or other online college support resources.

9. Review and Reflect on Your Learning Progress

Other steps more students should take when learning online is to review and reflect on the process of learning.

Doing so offers a host of benefits, including encoding the information you’ve learned into long-term memory, becoming a more productive student, and becoming a producer of knowledge rather than just a consumer of knowledge.

The question is, how do you review and reflect on your work? Follow these simple steps:

Regularly review materials from previous classes. Doing so helps you incorporate more recent learning with older learning. Your recent learning can also help you develop new insights into things you might have already learned but forgotten.

Regularly assess your own learning experience and growth. What have you learned? What skills have you gained? What are your strengths and weaknesses? What would you like to learn that you haven’t yet? Questions like these not only help you evaluate your progress but also help you establish goals for future learning.

Ask a lot of questions. As noted in the previous point, asking yourself about your academic progress thus far is valuable. But it’s also important to ask your professors and fellow students questions about what they know, how they achieve their academic goals, and seek advice about how you can improve.

Be inquisitive. Reviewing and reflecting on your progress should include inquiries into adjacent topics that further enhance your learning. For example, if you’re studying to be a teacher, expand your learning beyond what you’re being taught in class by reading relevant texts, joining education-related organizations for students, and participating with other students in a study session. These and other supplementary learning activities will go a long way in helping you understand what you know and what you still need to learn.

Practice a lot. Becoming reflective isn’t something that happens overnight! It’s a skill that students like you have to develop over time.

10. Plan for Your Future in Online Education

A final component of maximizing your experience learning online is to have a detailed plan before you begin.

Think of it like going on a trip – if you plan ahead, you will likely have a more successful trip with fewer problems. The same goes for education – you need to know what you want to do, where you want to do it, and what’s required to get it all done.

Online students like you can use the approaches below to plan for your future.

Explore Various Online Degree Programs

Let’s say you want to get your bachelor’s degree in fine arts. The local college offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts, so why not go there?

The local school might be the best choice, but you won’t know if you don’t inquire about other programs, too. Comparing online programs helps you get a clearer picture of the quality of the program, the financial aid opportunities the school offers, and the potential for specializing in your field.

Moreover, not all online programs are made alike. Your local college’s fine arts program might require you to attend virtual classes at specific times that don’t fit in with your schedule. Other online programs might require fine arts majors to participate in an on-campus art show at the program’s end, but if you can’t travel to campus, this is a significant problem!

These issues illustrate the need to do your due diligence when choosing a program. Go beyond the typical factors that students use to narrow down a list of potential colleges (e.g., program availability, cost, reputation) and drill down to a micro level so you understand what each program offers (and doesn’t offer) for your educational experience.

Prepare for the Next Step in Your College Journey

You’re already addressing this part of the planning process because you’re reading guides like this!

Knowing what you might expect as an online student is invaluable for making a smooth transition from in-person learning to learning online. While this and other guides can’t touch on every topic relevant to your experience, they are a good start in laying a solid foundation for your success.

Remember as well that online learning requires traditional and non-traditional academic skills to maximize your success. As noted earlier, non-traditional skills like enhanced written communication, understanding how to use technology, and excellent typing skills are necessary for most online learning situations.

But you also need traditional skills like active participation in class, the ability to take detailed notes, and sound study habits to succeed in online learning.

Stay Informed About New Online Courses and Opportunities

One of the many benefits of learning online is that you can take classes from schools around the world. This allows you to learn about topics of interest to you that your school might not offer.

Whether you officially enroll in a school to take a few courses, sign up for massive open online courses from another school, or something in between, exploring opportunities outside your school can help you supplement your core learning, learn new skills, and spark an interest in new areas of inquiry.

This isn’t to say that the school you choose won’t have a wealth of opportunities for you. Sign up for updates regarding new classes and learning opportunities, so you’re up to date about the topics you can explore in the future.

Making the Most of E-Learning

At the end of the day, your ability to make the most of e-learning starts with a solid foundation. By beginning the planning process now, your ability to find the right program for your needs and flourish in it will be significantly enhanced.

And as noted earlier, preparing yourself is also critical to your success. Take some time to reflect on your strengths and weaknesses as a student and try to address your weaknesses. Identify tools and resources to help you stay organized and on task, and explore programs at your school that help facilitate a better experience.

E-learning is a fantastic way to get an education. With the steps outlined here, you can make it an experience that’s even more productive and beneficial to you.

It’s no secret that college is expensive. Currently, the average cost of attending a four-year public college is $25,707 per year if you live on campus. For a typical four-year degree, that equates to $102,808. Even with significant financial aid programs like scholarships, federal Pell Grants, and grants from private organizations, you might still be on the hook for thousands of dollars of expenses. You need some online college financial tips.

A great way to minimize some of the expenses of college is to get a degree through online classes. Doing so eliminates the costs of living on campus, like room, board, and parking. It also eliminates the need to commute from home to school, saving you gas money and reducing wear and tear on your vehicle.

    <?php echo do_shortcode('[mobius_el]'); ?>

On top of that, many colleges have excellent online tuition rates. Some online colleges even charge the same tuition for in-state and out-of-state students. By avoiding high non-resident tuition, you can save hundreds of dollars on your education each semester.

It’s also worth your time to explore financial aid possibilities. Between federal student aid, scholarships, and other sources of assistance for online students, you can significantly reduce how much you pay for your degree.

Below are some excellent steps to maximize financial aid for your online studies and get some online college funding advice.

Research and Compare Online Colleges

As a prospective online college student, your first order of business is to research potential colleges. As you would for a brick-and-mortar school, you must get a complete picture of what an online college offers.

For example, research what colleges offer your desired degree program. If you want to major in psychology, business, education, or other popular fields, chances are good that most online colleges have a program that meets your needs.

However, suppose your area of study is more niche (e.g., forensic science, wildlife management, aerospace engineering). In that case, you will likely need to spend additional time finding a school that offers online degree programs in your field.

Other criteria to investigate for online education cost-saving tips include:

The school’s reputation. Examine the school’s online ratings from education-related publications and ratings from current students and graduates.

The school’s accreditation status. Attending an accredited school ensures that your program of study aligns with accepted standards. Regional accreditation is the gold standard, though national accreditation is also popular.

Location. Though the physical location of a school is less important if you study online, some courses and programs require periodic campus visits. As such, it might be worth enrolling in an online college just a short distance from your home.

The online learning environment. Colleges and universities have spent millions of dollars developing online learning platforms. Some colleges have done a better job than others, though. Look for schools that have a rich online campus with interactive courses, easy-to-access academic support, and other tools that make your online studies more accessible and more enjoyable.

Of course, your research must also focus on the cost of attendance. Note that this doesn’t just include tuition. Instead, compare schools in terms of their fees, too. For example, a school with low tuition might charge high fees, while a more expensive one has very few fees.

Many online colleges have a tuition estimator on their websites that give you a general idea of what you’ll pay for your education. Though an estimation tool like this is a good start, it’s prudent to speak with representatives from each school’s financial aid offices about receiving financial aid.

Understand Financial Aid Options

The number of financial aid opportunities for online students is more significant than ever before. With a greater selection of aid, you not only increase your chances of receiving financial aid, but you can also prioritize funding sources you don’t have to pay back, like scholarships.

Below is a quick breakdown of some of the aid available to online college students.

Scholarships for Online Students

Scholarships are essentially free money. Whatever the aid amount, it’s yours to use for school and related expenses without paying it back. Scholarships come in all shapes and sizes, from a few hundred dollars per semester to a full ride that pays for everything from tuition and fees to room and board.

Moreover, scholarships from individual colleges and universities, community organizations, and state agencies exist. Some scholarships are based on academic performance. Others are based on financial need, such as the student’s financial circumstances or family finances.

You can also find national, regional, and specialized scholarships for specific student groups, like military and ex-military students. You just have to put in the time and effort to identify potential sources of aid for online programs.

See Also: Laptop Tips and Tricks for Online College Students

Grants

Grants are another type of financial aid that doesn’t have to be paid back. Like scholarships, grants come in many dollar amounts and from sources ranging from state governments to federal government agencies to private organizations..

An example of this is the federal pell grant. Pell grants are reserved for undergraduate students who demonstrate financial need for higher education. These and other grants are instrumental in helping low-income students attend college. Pell grants can be used for online programs and on-campus studies.

Tuition Assistance

Tuition assistance typically comes from an employer and is used to offset the costs of educational expenses. This type of financial aid for online students doesn’t have to be paid back, provided you meet the requirements.

For example, your employer might offer assistance to complete your master’s degree. If you don’t complete your degree, you will likely have to repay any student aid you received from your employer.

Work-Study Programs

Work-study programs put you to work to pay for your schooling. Typically, work studies are in the community service realm or focus on an area related to your college major. For example, if you major in psychology, you might qualify for a work-study placement in a local mental health clinic in an entry-level position.

Work-study programs are available from more than just local businesses and organizations. Every state has a work-study program, and there are federal work-study programs, too. These programs are available for undergraduate and graduate students that demonstrate financial need.

Student Loans for Online Education

Unlike the previous types of financial aid outlined above, student loans must be paid back. Banks, credit unions, and other financial institutions offer many different types of loans, including private loans. The lender sets the terms and conditions of private loans.

There are also various federal direct loan program options, which the U.S. Department of Education provides. Since the Department of Education is the lender, it establishes the terms and conditions of its loans.

This type of federal aid offers the same financial aid to all kinds of students, including online college students, on campus students, and graduate students. There are four options, as outlined below.

Direct Subsidized Loans

Direct subsidized loans are available for undergraduate students that demonstrate financial need.

Direct Unsubsidized Loans

These loans are available for undergraduate students, graduate students, and professional students regardless of financial need.

Direct PLUS Loans

Direct PLUS loans are available for graduate and professional students and parents of undergraduate students. This direct loan program is available regardless of financial need.

Direct Consolidation Loans

These loans allow college students to combine various federal loans into one loan with one provider and one payment.

See Also: Scholarships for Military and Ex-Military Students

Apply for Scholarships and Grants

Since scholarships and grants don’t have to be paid back, it’s best to begin your financial aid search with awards for which you are eligible. All scholarships and grants come with detailed information about qualification requirements, award amounts, and so forth. This makes it easy to determine which awards you should apply for if you are looking to save money on online degrees.

The U.S. Department of Education recommends the following resources for finding scholarships and grants:

Your high school counseling office

A college’s financial aid office

Local businesses, non-profit organizations, and civics groups

Professional associations related to your intended major

The specific deadlines and requirements for scholarships and grants vary from one award to the next. It’s imperative that you carefully read all instructions to ensure you have completed all steps and submitted all required materials with your application.

It’s also important to begin the process of applying early. Filling out scholarship and grant applications can take a lot of time, given that you must provide detailed information about your financial need, higher education goals, your family’s finances, etc. Give yourself plenty of time to finish all the application requirements before the deadline.

Also commit to consistently searching for scholarships and grants – a one-time search is not enough. Additional awards might become available after your initial search!

Federal Student Aid

Many of the financial aid opportunities discussed above come in the form of federal aid. Whether loans, work studies, or grants, these types of federal financial aid require specific eligibility as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

The FAFSA is available online and requires you to submit details about yourself and your financial need. This includes providing your:

Social Security number (and your parents’ Social Security numbers if they claim you as a dependent)

Driver’s license number, provided you have one

Alien Registration number (non-U.S. citizens only)

Federal tax information, including your W-2 and your spouse’s W-2 if you’re married and file jointly (and your parents’ W-2 if you’re their dependent); IRS Form 1040; records of untaxed income; and details regarding investments, savings account balances, and checking account balances.

The U.S. Department of Education provides many resources to help guide you through the FAFSA online process, including this step-by-step guide and this collection of booklets and brochures. It’s worth consulting these resources before you begin filling out the free application so you know exactly what to expect and what documentation you need to provide.

Since this is a free application, avoid scams that require you to pay for services to help you complete the FAFSA. You can find all the help you need for free from the Department of Education, your high school counselor, or your college or university’s financial aid office.

Leverage Employer Benefits

As noted earlier, employer benefits can help you minimize expenses when pursuing higher education. Typically, this aid is given to you upfront, which you then use to pay for your school expenses.

The term “tuition assistance” is a bit misleading, though. The financial aid funds you receive often reimburse tuition, fees, books, transportation, and other related educational expenses.

Some employers offer tuition reimbursement as well. With reimbursement aid, you pay for your schooling yourself, and then your employer pays you back for the same amount. You might even find that your employer offers student loan repayment. Typically, companies will match your student loan payment.

Opt for Affordable Course Materials

Higher education isn’t just expensive because of tuition and fees. The materials you need for your courses also represent a significant money output. You want to secure funding for online courses.

For example, the average college textbook costs an estimated $105.37. If you take 12 undergraduate credits per semester, and each course requires a textbook, you might spend around $421.48 each semester. The typical undergraduate degree takes eight semesters of coursework, so the average student pays about $3,371.84 in books alone.

Fortunately, there are many different ways to save on course materials:

Buy used textbooks rather than new ones. Try buying books directly from other students – cutting out the middleman can save money.

Rent textbooks for a lower price than buying books outright.

Share textbooks with classmates to split the costs. As online students, you can access one copy of a digital textbook rather than each of you paying for a copy.

Check online for free versions of required books. Sites like Google Scholar and Project Gutenberg have archives of thousands of books and other resources.

Apply for financial aid specifically for books. Book scholarships, in particular, help offset the cost of books and supplies. Financial aid offices can help you identify any available book scholarships.

Search for Open Educational Resources (OERs). These resources are freely distributed and are becoming a popular option for online classes.

Create a Budget and Manage Expenses

Attending college isn’t just about learning the knowledge and skills you need for your future career. It’s also an opportunity to learn practical day-to-day skills like budgeting and managing expenses. You can hone these skills throughout the financial aid process.

For example, you might create a spreadsheet that tracks each type of financial aid you receive (or use any number of financial apps on your phone) so you know exactly how much money you get from each source. You can also get a student aid report from your school’s financial aid office that enumerates all your financial aid awards.

Once you know precisely how much money you will get each semester from your school’s financial aid office, identify your costs of attending college, including:

Tuition and fees

Books and supplies

Spending money

Room, board, and transportation costs, as applicable for online students

Then, devise a budget, ensuring that your expenditures are less than your incoming federal student aid, scholarships, grants, and other financial aid. Factor in your expected family contribution as well, such as money your parents provide to cover your expenses.

If your expenditures are more than the aid you receive, evaluate your needs and wants and eliminate expenses that aren’t absolutely necessary. As many college students do, consider finding a part-time job to cover expense overages.

Consider Loan Repayment Options

As noted earlier, private loans and federal student loans must be repaid. But, the interest rates and repayment options vary from one type of loan to the next.

For example, the interest rate on private loans for college students ranges anywhere from 4 percent to 15 percent. The average interest rate for federal student loans is 6.36 percent. All federal loans have a fixed interest rate, as do most private loans. However, some private loans have variable interest rates that change with market conditions. While this might mean your interest rate decreases at times, it also might increase.

As outlined below, private and federal government loans offer different repayment options.

Private Loan Repayment

Private loan lenders vary in their specific repayment plans. However, there are some common options for most lenders, as outlined below.

Deferred Repayment

Under a deferred repayment program, you don’t pay on your loans while in school. Deferments often extend into a grace period after graduation as well. A six-month grace period on private financial aid is typical.

Fixed Repayment

If you opt for a fixed repayment plan, you pay the same amount toward your loan each month while in school and during your grace period.

Interest Repayment

When on an interest repayment plan, you only pay toward the interest on your private loans while in school and during your grace period.

Then, once your grace period ends, you’ll have to make principal and interest payments on your loans. The amount you pay depends on your loan balance, interest rate, and the specific repayment plan you’ve selected with your lender.

These repayment methods run the gamut from a fixed monthly payment to a short-term interest-only payment to a graduated payment system where your payment starts lower and increases over time. Extended repayment is another option, which lowers your monthly payment, but extends the length of the repayment period.

Again, your options here will depend greatly upon your private loan lender. Note that making interest-only payments or opting for an extended repayment period for your financial aid will add to the overall cost of your loan.

Federal Financial Aid Repayment

Federal financial aid for online programs must be repaid using one of the specific repayment methods enumerated below. Just like you must meet financial aid eligibility requirements, you must also meet repayment requirements for these programs from the federal government.

Standard Repayment

All students with financial aid in the form of federal student loans are eligible for standard repayment. You’ll have a fixed monthly payment for the life of the loan, which is 120 months unless you consolidate your loans and extend the payment period (which can be up to 30 years). This type of repayment has the highest monthly payment but the lowest amount of interest paid.

Graduated Repayment

A graduated repayment schedule starts with a lower monthly payment and increases every two years. Eligible students include any federal loan borrower. The repayment period is 120 months, but consolidated loan payments can be extended to 30 years. This is a popular option for students who expect their income to rise with time.

Extended Repayment

This type of financial aid repayment is specifically for borrowers with more than $30,000 in student loan debt. The repayment period can be up to 25 years, which lowers the monthly payment, but greatly increases the interest paid.

Income-Driven Repayment

The U.S. Department of Education offers four income-driven repayment (IDR) programs. Each one is described below.

Revised Pay as You Earn (REPAYE)

The REPAYE financial aid program requires monthly payments roughly equivalent to 10 percent of your discretionary income divided by 12. The repayment period is 20 years for undergraduate loans and 25 years for graduate loans.

Pay As You Earn (PAYE)

The PAYE program requires a monthly payment of around 10 percent of your discretionary income divided by 12. However, the monthly payment is never more than the amount required for a 10-year Standard Repayment Plan.

Income-Based Repayment (IBR)

The IBR program requires a payment equal to 10 percent of your discretionary income (if you’re a new borrower) or 15 percent of your income (if you’re not a new borrower). But, the payment amount in both cases is capped at the 10-year Standard Repayment Plan amount.

Income-Contingent Repayment (ICR)

The ICR program requires a payment equal to 20 percent of your discretionary income or the amount you’d pay with a fixed payment over 12 years (adjusted to your income). You pay the lesser of the two amounts.

Each income-driven repayment option listed above has varying payments from year to year based on factors like your income and family size. You must report changes to income and family size each year to remain in the program.

Additionally, each IDR program offers the potential of loan forgiveness for the remaining balance after 20 or 25 years. If you work in public service, you may be eligible for loan forgiveness after ten years.
